Over Tor Brook Streamwork - Eastern Section

The Walkham Valley Project

The DTRG has studied the many facets of the Walkham valley (north of the Princetown to Tavistock road) since 1991 when the Upper Merrivale tin mill was excavated. Since then there has been a programme of surveying and recording significant tin workings in the Upper Walkham valley.

  • Upper Merrivale tin mill (excavated 1991-6, post-excavation work in progress)

  • Beckamoor Combe streamworks (surveyed 1992),

  • Wheal Fortune tin mine (surveyed 1993).

  • Wheal Prosper tin mine (SX 573 793, our remotest site, surveyed 1995),

  • Middle & Lower Merrivale tin mills (surveyed 1995): Lower Merrivale Plan

  • Roos Tor tinwork (surveyed 1997),

  • Over Tor Brook streamwork (surveyed 1999-2001),

  • Greenaball streamworks (surveyed 2001-2002),

  • Dead Lake and Merrivale Newtake (survey completed 2006 - this completes the survey of streamworks on the Walkham north of the Merrivale road)

Brimpts Tin Mine Clearance - 2006 onwards

In the mid 1990's a trail was set up by members of DTRG which takes visitors around the mines both near the farm, and on the open moor.  The current conservation work ensures that the trail is kept in good repair for visitors.

The work we have been doing has been carried out entirely by volunteers, with help and advice from Andy and Rick Bradford from Brimpts Farm, as well as Andy Crabb (English Heritage and DNPA).

In 2007 more clearance and maintenance work took place mostly on the mines near the farm, but also some around the North Mine. New interpretation boards were installed at discreet sites and a new colour self guided trail leaflet was produced. Further work is planned for 2008 onwards.

Tours of 1 to 3 hours led by DTRG members can be arranged. Interested groups are invited to contact Anne Whitbourn (01752 696257, email: annetimw@btinternet.com)
